This Tuesday October 18 at 7:30, FAIR Ontario will hear from Tobi Falana. Tobi is a law student at McGill Law School who has a BA in Sociology from Queen’s University. She was a finalist for the McCall McBain Scholarship; Canada’s first comprehensive leadership-based scholarship program for masters and professional studies at McGill university. Tobi was in foster care from a young age until her late teenage years and she continues to be in the care of the Toronto Catholic Children’s Aid Society. She volunteers actively with Toronto Police Service Neighbourhood officers in her hometown of Scarborough and the Taibu Community Health Centre; an organisation that delivers health and wellness services in a culturally affirming Afrocentric environment to support black communities. This past summer, Tobi worked as an intern at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, one of Canada’s leading corporate law firms.
In an effort to help and motivate people that have experienced their share of life’s challenges, whether it is navigating life as a product of the foster care system or lacking self esteem, Tobi uses her story as a tool to inspire others. Tobi Falana is a living testimony of two major institutions in Canada, the foster care system and the police services.
