Subject:
Approval of Vision Cards
Background:
The strategic roadmap for Mankato Area Public Schools identifies five strategic priorities:
Improving learning and development for each student
Strengthening our welcoming, connecting and partnership
Increasing student readiness for life options after graduation
Optimizing our management of all types of resources
Developing our staff’s capacity, skills and accountability

Over the past year, school district leaders and staff have engaged in a comprehensive review process of
the measures used in each of these areas. A major aspect of the study has been to ensure that the ways
success is measured in the system is equitable and inclusive.

At the work session on September 13, School Board members reviewed and discussed Vision Card
changes with Cabinet members. Final edits have been made and are ready for final Board review and
approval.

Time Stamps:

On Monday 09/20/2021 the school board passed “vision cards” that address Vision card B Goal 5: “new goal is to increase the number of staff of color and male staff working in the district to more closely mirror the student population. “Vision Card E titled ” Developing the capacity, skills and accountability of a diverse staff.” minute 5:00 of the board meeting Minute 6:00 we want to add additional vision cards for – measuring opportunities of advancement for our diverse staff. Minute 8:00 these are “living documents” always changing. Minute 9:00 Council member Reid starts speaking about hiring practices. they start talking about developing all staff, but at minute 12:45 start talking about adding more male hires because they are under represented. Minute 14:15 also wants to add more language to the vision cards addressing hiring more diverse staffing. School board member Mr. Walker, at minute 14:45 we have already set, for the superintendent, percentage of diversity goals for our staff and those are still applying toward subsequent years, would that, in your opinion, already address Mr. Reid’s concerns. Minute 15:00 superintendent Peterson begins speaking, maybe we need to reconsider setting personal goals specifically for the district’s vision goals.16:25 asks a question between the definition of representative staffing vs inclusive staffing.17:00 Did we target a certain population to apply at our jobs fair? Can we be more targeted in the future? (this was ironic because in another part of the meeting they said they didn’t get enough applicants.
