Announcement: New Newsletter Format

As a consequence of FAIR’s growth and the successful launch of new projects such as FAIR Transparency, FAIRstory, FAIR in Medicine, and FAIR Community, we are generating more news than ever. This is all very good, but has caused our newsletter to become increasingly long and overwhelming to our readers. To fix this, we have decided to split the newsletter into two weekly emails.

Now there will be a “FAIR News” newsletter, which will be delivered Thursday mornings and contain news specifically related to FAIR and our ongoing projects and events, and a “FAIR Weekly Roundup,” which will come out Sunday mornings and contain articles and podcasts from FAIR advisors and other interesting thinkers.

We hope this new format coupled with an increased font size will make our content easier to read and digest.

Fair for All Substack Launch

FAIR is proud to announce the launch of our new Substack—Fair for All. This is the official publication for The Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism, and will serve as a platform for original content that exemplifies FAIR’s commitment to advancing civil rights and liberties, and a common culture based on fairness, understanding and humanity.

Our content will never be placed behind a paywall, but in the future we may offer some additional perks for members and paying subscribers. Please stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

A Letter to the FAIR Community

To kick off our new Substack, Fair for All is featuring a letter to our community by FAIR Founder Bion Bartning regarding United States Attorney General Merrick Garland’s October 4th memo alleging “violence” in local school districts across the country.

Additionally, we respond point-by-point to the claims made in the National School Boards Association’s letter that prompted the Attorney General’s memo, demonstrating that there is no justification for federal involvement in local school board matters at this time.

New Videos

Be Kind to Those You Hate

This week, FAIR is featuring two new videos with blues musician and anti-racism activist Daryl Davis. In the first video, Davis explains why we should be kind even to those you hate, because when we respond to hate with more hate, we merely perpetuate a toxic cycle. However, when we return negativity with kindness, we help instill the habit of kindness in others.

In the second video, Davis shows how applying these principles in his own life helped break the cycle of hate, which ultimately caused over 200 Klansmen to denounce their racist beliefs and turn in their robes.

FAIR Legal Webinar

On October 7th, FAIR hosted a legal webinar titled “Civil Rights in Our K-12 Schools: Challenges and Options in the Era of Intolerance.” The webinar included FAIR Advisors and a panel of legal experts who discussed the legal avenues available for civil rights violations in schools and the options available to parents and guardians to advocate for civil liberties and tolerance.

Panelists include FAIR’s Legal Network Managing Director Letitia Kim, FAIR Advisor Maud Maron, and litigator and trial lawyer Daniel Cragg. The panel is moderated by FAIR Advisor Ian Rowe.

FAIR Mental Health Webinar

On September 22nd, FAIR hosted a mental health webinar titled “A Path Forward: Protecting Students’ Mental Health in a Divisive World.” The panel included former educator Paul Rossi and Dana Stangel-Plowe, the psychoanalyst, parent coach, and author Erica Komisar, LCSW, and healthcare expert Dr. Carrie Mendoza, MD, and Brooklyn Technical High School senior Daniel Idfresne.

Panelists discussed how ideologies that fixate on immutable traits contribute to childhood anxiety and depression, the ways human psychology is being manipulated to push illiberal ideas, the psychological impact of shaming and silencing speech, and much more.

The Omni-American Future

On October 24th and 25th, The American Sephardi Federation, the Jazz Leadership Project, and the Combat Antisemitism Movement are joining forces to fight Racism and Antisemitism with an online event featuring artists, thinkers, and musicians who will offer perspectives on a shared "Omni-American” future. FAIR is a sponsor for the event, and FAIR Advisor Thomas Chatterton-Williams as well as Pamela Paresky will be speaking at the event.

The term “Omni-American” is borrowed from the writings of Albert Murray, the great 20th century Black American thinker and writer who, together with his good friend and celebrated novelist, Ralph Ellison, extolled America’s pluralistic and “incontestably mulatto” culture.

By robustly critiquing racial essentialism and strongly emphasizing the power of culture instead of race, Murray and Ellison's writings strike at the root of ideologies that foster division, manipulation, and hatred, and ultimately develop into Antisemitism and Racism.
