From February 18-24, libraries across the country celebrated the annual event that \u2018encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom.\u2019<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/img1.wsimg.com\/blobby\/go\/80918cb8-76d5-4cb4-902d-b164080ed0bc\/downloads\/THELAKEREPORT-February22-2024-forweb.pdf?ver=1708628781890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cathy Simpson, the CEO of Niagara-on-the-Lake\u2019s public library, took to her local paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to express her concern about the increasing pressure to suppress certain viewpoints and select books that promote \u201cprogressive\u201d ideas over \u201ctraditional\u201d ideas. After engaging with other librarians who also believed in library neutrality and pluralism, Cathy was\u00a0 introduced to FAIR.<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFAIR\u2026 supports Freedom to Read Week\u2019s principles of intellectual freedom, freedom of expression, freedom to read and resistance to censorship.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, a local resident and some co-workers did not share Ms Simpson\u2019s sentiments.\u00a0 The library&#8217;s board of directors went on to terminate Cathy\u2019s employment, just three years shy of her retirement. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-263cced elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"263cced\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7642a13\" data-id=\"7642a13\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5205f2d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5205f2d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to this turn of events, Monica Harris (FAIR\u2019s Executive Director) penned a thoughtful letter to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/monica-harris-the-unjust-firing-of-ontario-librarian-who-challenged-dei-orthodoxy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Post: the unjust firing of Ontario librarian who challenged DEI orthodoxy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAIR stands against censorship of any kind and advocates respectful disagreement because we believe bad ideas are best confronted with good ideas \u2014 and never with deplatforming or blacklisting.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c Ultimately, the best way to promote tolerance is through education and open discourse. To this end, the goal of FAIR\u2019s library program is to assist librarians in their efforts to include the widest possible range of perspectives in curating their collections. <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026.<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLastly, and most importantly, the contention that certain views are unworthy of representation in a library misunderstands the responsibility of public institutions. Libraries have a sacred duty to provide access to all citizens, including those whose perspectives are deemed offensive or heterodox. It&#8217;s been a steady progression of increasing dehumanization, of groups that we have suddenly othered and shamed. <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We rationalize this othering and the shame through fear and other means&#8230;.<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the reasons that I took this job is because it&#8217;s an organization that&#8217;s dedicated to preserving our common humanity and our mutual respect and dignity for other people.
